Inside Out Magazine Sep/Oct '10 Issue (no. 87)

Inside Out Sep/Oct '10 (issue 87)

Inside Out magazine debuted in April 2000. It came onto the scene as an exciting new addition displaying a modernism that seemed to be under represented by the other interiors magazines of the time. The title seemed to draw the attention of the younger design generation in a market of stalwarts including Australian House & Garden, Australian Home Beautiful & Vogue Living.

For the past 10 years, since its’ inception, Inside Out’s Editor has been the venerable Karen McCartney.

McCartney has evolved the magazine over time to its current glorious incarnation. This issue sees McCartney’s last Editor’s letter as she steps down from the role as Editor of Inside Out to concentrate on her role as Editorial Director of News Magazines. The titles McCartney will oversee include: Notebook, Inside Out & Australian Country Style.

In the magazine’s 10th Anniversary May/Jun 2010 Issue, the editor Karen McCartney wrote:

"We wanted to show homes that inspired our readers & then tell them how to do it: how to japan-black a floor, source the artwork or have a sofa covered. We wanted to be modern & relevant, trustworthy & resourceful, inspirational & good to look at... & I think we have achieved all of the above."

As a faithful reader & longtime subscriber (I have all 10 years worth of issues including all special editions), I wholeheartedly concur with McCartney’s assessment of the magazine.

I have always enjoyed McCartney’s editorial ship. Her refined taste was always reflected not only in her opening Editor’s letter, but also in her Editor’s choice last word article. McCartney leaves a wonderful legacy behind.

I will miss her immediate contribution to Inside Out but rest easy in the knowledge that her stewardship continues in her new capacity as Editorial Director & that a very capable successor has been appointed in her stead.

As for the new Editor at Inside Out, I look forward to seeing his vision unfold. Richard Waller is the new Editor & comes from the Inside Out’s stablemate publication, Vogue Living, where he was Deputy Editor.
